Fire Safety House Scheduling

Guidelines for Scheduling
The Burns Recovered Support Group (BRSG) Fire Safety House is a sophisticated educational tool for teaching important fire safety messages to adults and children. The Safety House is a small replica of a house with a living room, kitchen, and bedroom and is handicapped accessible. Various fire hazards are set up in the rooms and a light non-toxic "smoke" is used to simulate a fire situation.

Qualifying Events for Use of Clubhouse
The Safety House may be requested for events planned as public educational activities. We do not recommend using the Safety House as a game or "showpiece" attraction such as part of a carnival or store grand opening.

Agencies planning educational activities that wish to have the Safety House at their event must first contact their local fire department. BRSG can then work with them to cover operational logistics.

Logistical Requirements
The Safety House is a trailer and will be pulled into place by a pick-up truck. It must have a flat, level surface of approximately 40 x 20 feet for set-up. Approximately one hour set-up time prior to the first public demonstration will be needed.

There must be an electrical outlet supplying a minimum of 15 amps within 150 feet of the set-up location or two separate circuits of 15 amps within 100 feet of the location if the air conditioner is to be used. The Safety House can be run on a portable generator but is not recommended unless increased requirements for personnel and supplies are met and refueling hazard addressed.

The Safety House is heated for use during cold weather, however inclement weather including high or gusty winds at any time of year will necessitate cancellation of the appointment.

A minimum of one trained BRSG Driver/Trainer shall be assigned to supervise operation of the Safety House for the full duration of any event. Remaining personnel to operate the Safety House must be supplied by the fire department requesting the Safety House.

(Note: a minimum personnel requirement for safe operation of the Safety House is 4. Normal operation requires 7.)

Handout materials (if any) will also be the responsibility of the hosting department.

User Fee
A fee of $75.00 for an event will be required to cover maintenance and "smoke" chemical usage costs. For use outside of St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln and Warren counties other fees may apply and will be handled separately per need.

Operational Requirements
Plan on allowing about 30 minutes for the hosting F.D. personnel to receive an "in service" on operation and instructional techniques for the various stations in the Safety House.

Children and adults will be broken into groups of six or so and move through the learning stations as a group. Plan on about 5 minutes of instruction for each of the five learning stations in the Safety House.

The learning stations consist of:

  1. Welcome to the Clubhouse/Introduction/Video presentation
    (outside)

  2. Kitchen Hazards & Safety
    (Kitchen)

  3. Household Hazards
    (Living Room)

  4. Escape Planning
    (Bedroom)

  5. Dial 9-1-1
    (once escape is made)

Personnel requirements for normal operation are one for each learning station, one at the escape ladder for safety, and one in the Control Room. Adjustments can be made for fewer instructors within minimum requirements.

Scheduling Guidelines
To schedule the Safety House contact BRSG no sooner than six (6) months and not later than two (2) weeks prior to the event. If there is an unexpected, last minute event, you are welcome to try and schedule the event, but please understand that BRSG may not be able to obtain a designated Driver/Trainer for a date with such short notice.

IMPORTANT: The weekend of "Fill the Helmet" and Fire Safety Week, in October, will have special guidelines. All requests for these times must be made a minimum of thirty (30) days prior to the date.

In our attempt to treat all agencies in as fair a manner as possible, all requests for these special times will be met, excluding multiple requests for the same date. If there have been multiple requests for the same date, these names will be put in a hat and the decision will be made by lottery.

Also, departments needing financial assistance to use the Fire Safety House are asked to contact us regarding their needs.
